#187:Logical Fallacies
Many people (in fact, most people) commit logical fallacies during arguments.
Logical fallacies are errors in arguments that are based around the way the
arguments are structured, not what facts they use.
An common pastime of academy members is arguing. Not the normal kind of
arguing - they're perfectly good at that and prefer to save that sort of thing
for more serious occasions. Instead, they enjoy trying to argue with each
other as badly as possible, packing in as many logical fallacies as they can.
Can you identify which fallacies are used where?
Anna: Afternoon, Dr. Bajdan. So what do you think of X's new proposal to
ban malicious obfuscation in puzzle construction? Practically all of the
subcommittee members back it.
Dr. Bajdan: I think it's absurd! Why, Dr. Canovitch's always said that we're
making it too simple these days, which should be good enough for anyone.1
Anna: Dr. Canovitch's a drunk! He hasn't produced a decent puzzle for years!2
If we let Canovitch have any say in these things we'd end up with impossibly
byzantine puzzles that you couldn't even read.3
Dr. Bajdan: I shall prentend I didn't hear that. Honestly, the choice here
is for puzzles to be absurdly simple or sensibly designed, and I know which
I'd go for4 I haven't seen any proof that people think our puzzles are too
obtuse5
Anna: A typically inconsistent argument, one which I have come to expect
from you. Indeed, I recall that after your group altered the format for the
Academy summer tournaments, registrations dropped 30%.6 7
Dr. Bajdan: Hum! I see that we will have to agree to disagree on this issue.
Anna: Agreed. More cake?
Dr. Bajdan: Absolutely.
